We determine whether defendants have the capacity to understand the nature and objective of the proceedings and assist in their defense. This can include other legal competencies, such as competence to be sentenced, enter a plea, or waive appeals.

Commonly called sanity evaluations, we assess an evaluee’s mental condition at the time of the offense.

We assess issues that can be introduced as mitigating factors in presenting a defense, negotiating a plea agreement, or during sentencing.

Our risk assessments for violence and sexual recidivism aid courts in determining the least restrictive environments and interventions consistent with evaluees’ therapeutic needs and the safety of the community. 

Courts and attorneys often request general psychological assessments to inform their decisions about a particular case, mitigate concerns for appeal, or inform sentencing recommendations. These evaluations focus on identifying psychopathology or other conditions of clinical significance, and include intervention recommendations.

We examine whether an evaluee’s substance use disorder, mental illness, having been a victim of human trafficking or compelling prostitution, or intellectual disability was a factor in their alleged offense. We provide opinions about whether treatment would reduce the likelihood of reoffending, and intervention plans tailored to the evaluees’ needs.

We have a wealth of experience in the assessment of malingering, including evidence-based clinical interviews and the administration of measures designed to detect feigning, lack of effort, or exaggeration of mental health symptoms. 

Employers (particularly law enforcement agencies) may require evaluations when they have questions about an individual’s ability to perform a specific job, perhaps due to that individual’s mental health history or present behaviors of concern.

We have experience conducting N-648 evaluations (medical certifications of disabilities) and evaluations of extreme hardship, which applies to a variety of waivers. We frequently work with interpreters and use trauma-informed interviewing.

We provide consultation for trial preparation, developing strategies for cross-examining other experts, and other matters related to forensic psychology. We also offer consultation regarding improving forensic reports and data-driven quality assurance practices.
